Reef Identification: Grand Cayman Reefs

Artifical Reef Awareness
Diver Awarenesss: Texas Gulf and Posionous Marine Life.

There are many different types of marine life. Some are brightly colored, some are territorial, and others camaflagoe themselves to blend in with the suroundings. To the diver it is obvious not to offer a finger to draw one the critter closer for a better view, however we sometimes forget our brains and play with animals which fight have a very sharp bite or sting. Nevertheless, there are those animals which we see in shell shops and desire to touch or collect a speciman. WARNING some shells like the cone shell which are sand dwellers use a harpon with a nerotoxin to paralyize and kill its food. This nero-toxin can neutralize the sodium in a persons nervous system and cause the nerves not to recieve signals like to the heart or diaphram. Other marine life such as corals and jelly fish are members of the phylum Colenderata which in latin colony of cells which some specialize in stinging to collect food for the community. Some stinging cells called nemphosites can be quiet posinous to humans.

Other marine life like the southern skate, not to be confused with the Stingraywhich are in the same phylum of chordata, has yellow spots with white rings, Its protection is a 500 volts of electricity. Other bottom dwellers are the freshwater eels which have a very large month which hates fins on its borrow. These eels usually live at the bottom in mud and travel up rivers in spring time to breed. There are also 15 species of bottom dwelling eel's in the Texas gulf along with Octopus building burrows in the oyster shells. The family of fish which lascks a swim bladder like the stonefish, stargasers, robinfish, and toadfish all blend in with the sourrounding and have posoinous dorsal spines. This family of animals is an ambush predator and uses the spines if eaten to prick the mouth of a larger fish and spits them out again.

At the bottom of most rigs in the Texas Gulf there are a carnviours type coral's and hydroid's. They usually live in the colder waters and have polyups large enough to kill a shrimp. Wearing a full Scuba Diving Texas Open Water to cover arms and legs is inportant to avoid accidential stings. The stings will rott the skin and leave a deep whole in your skin. WARNING

Barnicales on Texas Gulf rigs are large and can encrust a thickness of 8 to 10 inches of growth over the pipes. The highest growth range is from 15 feet of deep to about 65 feet. These crusteans have 8 plates and two of the plates being longer and sharp as razor blades. They are also covered with aglae and bateria where infection of a cut is a forsure event.

Wearing protective Scuba Diving Texas Open Waters, gloves and head protection is always best in the Texas gulf along with good pratice of diving skills. Bouyancy control, don't touch anything and enjoy the beauty of gulf marine communities.
